Off The Griddle — Alberta Arts District Guide
The Alberta Arts District Guide: How to Spend a Morning on NE Alberta Street
Murals, galleries, indie shops and Last Thursday — plus the brunch that fuels it all, right in the middle of the street at NE Alberta & 22nd.
Alberta Street is best explored on foot and on a full stomach. Fifteen blocks of murals, galleries, independent shops and neighborhood bars reward wandering with no plan at all.
We’ve been cooking on this street for years at Off The Griddle on NE Alberta, and we’ve watched a lot of people figure out the district one block at a time. Here’s the shortcut: our favorite way to spend a morning in the Alberta Arts District, start to finish.
Your Alberta Morning, Hour by Hour

Head east toward NE 30th, then loop back on the other side of the street. Peek down the side streets — some of the best walls are just off Alberta.

Start With Brunch (Seriously, Start Here)
Galleries open late morning, and you’ll want fuel before you walk. Off The Griddle sits at 2215 NE Alberta St, right in the middle of the district, so it’s the natural base camp for the day.
Our menu is vegan by default and built on big comfort food, so the non-vegan in your group won’t feel like they’re missing anything.
Berries + Cream Waffle
Chia-berry jam, sweet cream and fresh berries on our gluten-free blue cornmeal waffle.
Hashtastic
Butternut squash, brussels sprouts, kale and potatoes under cashew ricotta.
Fiesta Mac
House cheese sauce, OTG chorizo, braised kale, jalapeños and sour cream.
First time? Order one of these.
- Feast Waffle — stuffed with hash browns, vegan cheddar and sausage, topped with country gravy and tofu scramble. Breakfast inside breakfast.
- Biscuits + Gravy — house-made biscuits, peppery country gravy, braised kale. The dish that converts skeptics.
- Brisket Hash — jackfruit “brisket” over crispy potatoes with horseradish aioli and pickled onions.
- Chk’n Waffle — fried chk’n and maple syrup. Add gravy if you’re smart.
Every waffle on our menu is gluten-free, and plenty of other dishes can be made gluten-free on request. At the bar, try a Bloody Mary with one of our house-infused vodkas — spicy jalapeño, gazpacho, or Bangkok Thai basil & ginger — or go for a mimosa or a rotating kombucha. See the full brunch cocktail list.
☀️ Pro tip: come on a weekday
Weekend mornings on Alberta get packed everywhere. Monday through Friday, you can usually walk right in, linger over coffee, and have the galleries mostly to yourself afterward. We’re open every day, 9AM–3PM — here’s everything you need for your Alberta visit.
Walk the Murals
Alberta is one of Portland’s great open-air galleries. Murals cover storefronts, side walls and alleys up and down the street, many exploring themes of community, justice and the environment. There’s no official route — walk east from our door toward NE 30th, loop back on the other side, and keep an eye on the side streets. Give yourself about an hour, and bring your phone.
Browse the Galleries & Shops
The Alberta Arts District earned its name. Few Portland streets pack in this many galleries, print studios, bookshops, vintage stores and makers selling handmade clothing, jewelry and paper goods. Monograph Bookwerks — part gallery, part art bookstore — is a favorite stop. Most shops open by late morning, which makes a 9:30 or 10AM brunch the perfect lead-in.
Save Room for the East End
At NE 30th & Alberta, the Alberta Rose Theatre is a 1927 movie house reborn as a live venue for music, comedy and film — check the calendar and your brunch day might turn into a full day. Salt & Straw’s Alberta scoop shop is on the street too, if you somehow have room after the Feast Waffle.
Last Thursday on Alberta
On the last Thursday of every month, Alberta hosts one of Portland’s longest-running art walks, with gallery opening parties and live music at bars and venues. In summer, the street itself becomes the party.
Our move: come for a late brunch, scout the galleries you want to hit, then come back that night when the openings start.
